Topical Spironolactone Creams for Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is a common condition that occurs when hair follicles on the skin get clogged causing blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. It occurs and starts most commonly in teenagers due to hormonal changes, but can persist throughout a person’s lifetime. Acne can occur on the face and forehead, chest, shoulders, and back.

Acne can be caused by a myriad of factors including clogged skin pores, certain weather conditions, makeup or skincare, stress, diet, smoking and family history. Some options to help with preventing severe acne flare-ups include washing face daily with an oil-free cleanser, eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and implementing ways to reduce stress.

How can I treat Hormonal Acne?

There are a variety of topical, oral and aesthetic treatments for acne. They are recommended on a patient-to-patient basis as the severity of acne will vary by case and per flare-up. As acne most commonly starts during puberty due to hormonal changes, acne flare-ups can persist throughout these changes and through a person’s lifetime. Hormonal acne typically occurs on the lower cheeks, jawline and chin.

Spironolactone has been found to be a beneficial treatment for hormonal acne. It works by lowering androgens, one of the hormones that can trigger acne, which ultimately reduces oil production and acne breakouts. This is because high amounts of androgens in the body increases production of sebum which is an oily substance found in skin glands. It also dampens the inflammatory response which can also trigger acne. Spironolactone is typically applied topically, and is ideal for those who have difficulty with oral medications. Its effects may start working within several weeks to clear or reduce acne. To note– if pregnant, speak with your provider before starting treatment as spironolactone is typically considered unsafe in pregnancy.
