Low-Dose Tretinoin: How to Treat Cystic Breakouts without Damaging Your Skin Barrier
What is Acne?
Acne is a common condition that occurs when hair follicles on the skin get clogged causing blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. In worse cases it can cause papules, pustules, nodules or cysts which are large bumps under the skin which usually contain pus. Acne occurs and starts most commonly in teenagers due to hormonal changes, but can persist throughout a person’s lifetime. Acne can occur on the face and forehead, chest, shoulders, and back.
Acne can be caused by a myriad of factors including clogged skin pores, certain weather conditions, makeup or skincare, stress, diet, smoking and family history. Some options to help with preventing severe acne flare-ups include washing face daily with an oil-free cleanser, eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and implementing ways to reduce stress.
How can I treat Acne?
There are a variety of topical, oral and aesthetic treatments for acne. They are recommended on a patient-to-patient basis as the severity of acne will vary by case and per flare-up. Most common medication treatments include tretinoin. Speak with your provider before initiating therapies as some may be unsafe if pregnant.
Tretinoin has been found to be a beneficial treatment for all types of acne cases, including cystic acne. It is a form of Vitamin A which stimulates cell turnover quickly – opening pores to release trapped bacteria or irritants triggering the acne. It also helps regulate sebum production which is the oil your skin naturally produces, which a large amount of can trigger acne, and also has anti-inflammatory properties.
How do I use Topical Tretinoin?
1. Wash your face with warm water and wash your hands. Allow both to dry (up to 20-30 minutes) before applying the medication.
2. Apply a thin layer to affected areas.
3. Rub it lightly and let it absorb completely.
Ideally apply prior to bedtime so the medication will have time to absorb and have less interaction with sunlight.
