Rosacea Around the Eyes? Ophthalmic-Safe Options

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common inflammatory skin condition which is characterized by long-term redness around the face, neck, and chest; and sometimes includes bumps and swelling. Research for its cause is still ongoing, but typically occurs in those past the age of 30, those with a history of smoking, or those with a family history of rosacea. While its exact cause is unknown, potential factors for flare-ups may include the sun and wind, hot drinks, spicy foods, alcohol, hot and cold temperatures, stress, exercise, and some medications.

While typically in larger areas of the face, rosacea can also occur around the eyes. This can become more difficult for treatment as topical treatments can be detrimental if contact is accidentally made with the eye. However, there have been further studies that some ingredients may be more ophthalmic-safe than others.

How do I treat Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that does not currently have a cure. Treatment is typically used for flare-ups and to minimize symptoms. The most common treatments for rosacea are topical ones applied to the affected areas daily throughout the duration of symptoms. The exact treatment varies from person to person, as the severity of the condition also varies from person to person. However, it most often includes a cream or gel base with active ingredients including ivermectin, metronidazole, and oxymetazoline which all help to reduce redness, swelling and minimize bumps.

What is Metronidazole?

Metronidazole is a common active ingredient found in topical treatments for rosacea. Studies have recently shown that it may be more ophthalmically-safe compared to other common active ingredients, and it can be used specifically for ocular rosacea - specifically around the lid and under the eyes. However, check with your provider and pharmacist to make sure your preparation is eye-safe and indicated for your specific rosacea case.
